Get to know our Producer!

Jim Kimball

Producer of The Jon & Chris Show

A longtime resident of Boise, Jim is the behind (and sometimes in front of) the scenes guy for the Jon and Chris show. As the producer, we’re not sure exactly what he does but he has convinced us that he is a valuable member of 63/KFXD staff so we allow him to hang around. After Jon and Chris were hired, they took a liking to him. More on that later but first a bit of Jim history.

Jim started his checkered radio career working at our sister station 580 KIDO while attending BSU. It seems the radio station had a World Book Encyclopedia in the newsroom that Jim used in his studies of Mass Communication. A master at spot reporting, news writing, and even a stint as a “DJ” on one of those newfangled FM stations allowed him to avoid detection by management who were looking for ways to reduce payroll. Successfully dodging the long walk off a short plank, he was asked by Jon and Chris to operate the equipment for their show. He agreed to do it on the condition that Jon teach him how to play hockey and golf during the commercial breaks. Thus, the team of Jim, Jon and Chris were together for the first time.

Sometime after World War II, Jim left radio to follow his dream of marrying the lovely Charlotte. She agreed to marry him after losing a bet in a poker game held weekly behind their home in Nampa. Even though Jim enjoys travel it seems he was home long enough to have two daughters (Jami and Aine) and a really big dog that poops on the rug when the phone rings. It turns out to be Jim’s greatest accomplishment. (The daughters and Charlotte, not the dog.)

We could name drop a few of the people Jim has interviewed such as Bob Keeshan (Capt. Kangaroo) Dave Thomas (Wendy’s) and legendary talk show host Barry Farber, but frankly we can’t prove that he actually did the interviews as most of these people are deceased. Sure Jim, and we interviewed Elvis…yea, yea, that’s it! Sure!

You think we would have learned our lesson but in the summer of 2007 when 63/KFXD hired Jon and Chris bringing back the legendary Boise talk hosts, Jimmy was the natural fit to again come aboard and assist in their triumphant return. So far so good as Jim has proved his talent in so many ways to 63/KFXD and The Jon and Chris show, that we actually gave him a desk and chair to use during the program.

Happily booking guests and rendering an opinion on the air from time to time, Mr. Kimball makes producing Jon & Chris mornings, special on all Talk 63, KFXD.

Morning show producer Jim Kimball….We tolerate him, the other station employees like him, and Jon and Chris love him. Call us crazy, but we think you will too!

Jon Duane and Chris Kelly

If Idaho had a soul, a conscience, a sense of humor, sense of self, and a deep understanding of what it is, ....it is expressed in words every morning, with live and local legendary radio hosts Jon & Chris on All Talk 63/KFXD.

Peak Broadcasting's commitment to local Boise radio starts with Idaho natives Jon & Chris. The Treasure Valley community from the governor and mayor to local & national celebrities make the Jon & Chris show a must visit.

Jon Duane was actually born and raised here in Boise. Much as others tried to get him out of town on occasion we don’t believe he has overstayed his welcome. Born with a silver microphone in his mouth, the fact is, New York City, Denver, and Phoenix wanted him to stay there and pursue a successful radio career, but when you have a chance to go home, you take it. (Unless you are wanted in the state or there are too many relatives waiting to borrow money from you.) Jon was home indeed!

Chris Kelly on the other hand wasn’t born here, in fact, she was on her way from California after graduation (UCLA thank you very much) to NYC to join a theater group. Stopping in Boise to see her parents and score a free meal, Chris fell in love with our little slice of heaven and never left. Her parents said she could stay only if she got a job. Her dad suggested the local K-Mart but Chris became confused on the way to the interview and ended up at radio station K-106. As part of a morning show that became top rated, Chris knew this was just like theater, except for the orchestra, makeup, seats, tickets, stage, curtain, and lights. She stayed.

One day Jon and Chris were doing a TV appearance (both have done many) on a local food show with Chris holding a jar of peanut butter and Jon a bowl of chocolate. Tripping on a wire on stage they both fell spilling their chocolate and peanut butter into one big mess. A passing candy investor and merger specialist, one Mr. Reese suggested they consider putting their talents together for a combination morning radio show. “Don’t worry about the mess on the floor, you go ahead, I’ll just clean up this peanut butter and chocolate and put it together in this large cup” he said. The result is one of the best combinations of all time…….The Jon & Chris Show.

Year after almost fifteen years Jon and Chris became the top rated morning radio program on our sister station down the hall, 580 KIDO. But wait! There’s more! Chris is a first rate investigative street reporter making a name for herself nationally with the Associated Press and numerous national networks, while Jon sharpened his skills as a co-host, interviewer, and TV spokesman for many companies.

When you become number one, people want to give you awards, ask you to speak at many large functions, and brighten up an otherwise potentially dull community event. Assuming your mother taught you that charity begins at home; Jon and Chris gave their time and talent to many in the Treasure Valley over the years. Weaving themselves into the fabric of this fast growing Great American Western City, Jon and Chris became synonymous with Boise and Idaho. We’re glad they did as you will soon see!

A few years ago, this top rated morning team left radio after someone suggested that Jon might like the game of golf and Chris should consider her fate starring in local theater, her first love. Chris also took to writing articles for Boise Weekly, Home Adventure and Engage magazine. Not to be outdone, home handyman Jon built his own house overlooking a golf course using material found in downtown Boise at an undeveloped construction site called “The Pit.”Life was good, except for one thing….they missed being on the radio.

Peak Broadcasting, a local oriented radio company came to town and bought the oldest radio station in Idaho. 63/KFXD. They hired a professional outdoorsman named Kevin Godwin to make KFXD great again. Kevin put down his fishing rod and picked up the phone. He called Jon and Chris who somehow both answered the phone at the same time. Even though Jon was re-building a dog house for his faithful companion and bearded collie Miss Roo and Chris was teaching Yoga and Pilates. (Look it up, we did!) After getting the thumbs up from their overly patient and saint like spouses Steve (Chris) and Dianna (Jon) they agreed to return to morning radio.

In July of 2007 the new Jon and Chris show commenced on the new All Talk 63/KFXD. Life is good…all is well! And the rest “as they say” is History! Re-united with their former producer Jim Kimball, the Jon and Chris show will capture the rhythm of Boise and life in Idaho daily from 6 to 10am. How is it going?

Boise Weekly Magazine in a (September) reader’s poll was simply giddy about Jon & Chris's return to radio.

"We admit to shamelessly loving the return of radio’s best odd couple, Chris and Jon in the mornings on the new 630-AM KFXD. There’s nothing like having longtime pros behind the mics talking about local doings".

Naturally, we won’t argue with that! We’ll just listen….

Now we know what the soul of our great city sounds like!
